5. Inner Space Cavern
Inner Space Cavern, situated near Georgetown, is an incredible natural attraction. Carved out by water flowing through Edwards limestone over 20-25 million years ago, the cave boasts breathtaking beauty inside.
Year-round, it’s open to the public – especially during summer when visitors can escape Texas’ oppressive heat and enjoy some much needed respite from its extreme temperatures. Families will love visiting this accessible spot as there are plenty of activities for children to engage in.
A one-hour tour through the cavern’s most popular areas showcases some of its stunning rock formations. It’s an incredible experience that should not be missed if you’re visiting the area.
Inside the cave you’ll discover an array of rock formations, such as stalactites and stalagmites. Stalactites form when water drops filled with calcium carbonate fall to the floor and over time grow into stalagmite rocks.
In addition to stalactites and stalagmites, there are other fascinating features in the cavern such as columns and drapery. Plus, it boasts a large sinkhole about the size of a football field.
For something a bit more adventurous, they offer the Wild Cave Tour. This tour can be booked Saturday and Sunday only and requires advance reservation.
Another amazing aspect of this cave is that it’s a living cave, meaning it constantly evolves and creates new stunning formations. Guides will take you deep inside the cavern to show you how these stunning creations have been formed over 80,000 years.
